There are over a thousand species of rhododendron some of which are native to the Pacific Northwest. Rhodos are happiest in well draining, acidic soil receiving only part sun. The dappled shade beneath mature trees is an ideal spot for planting rhododendrons.
The beautiful blooms that cover rhododendrons in the spring and summer have historically made these plants extremely popular. As a result there are many cultivated varieties available to suit most gardens. Given the right conditions, rhododendrons are fairly low maintenance and add a old-world elegance to the landscape.
